Devin the Dude, Blues Traveler

It would be easy to dismiss the music of Devin "the Dude" Copeland as simply paeans to weed, women, and wine—if you weren't really listening. The Dude is a bluesman and a storyteller, owing as much of his persona to Wilson Pickett and Bobby Womack as to Run-D.M.C. and Rakim. Seemingly unaffected by hiphop trends since his cult-classic '98 debut, The Dude, Devin has continued to make music that is soulful, sincere, and self-aware. With Houston now being the newest "it" city for rap music, it's about goddamn time the Dude got his due.

Devin's half-sung raps flow molasses-thick with an effortlessness that very few in hiphop's pantheon possess; it's easy to forget he's seamlessly rhyming his bars ("I'm higher/than a thumbtack on a flier/of Reba McEntire in the hood/it's all good") and not just talking to you, saying some outlandish shit in the middle of a late-night blunt session. Indeed, it's easy to overlook the fact that Devin's one of the South's premier MCs. With an earnestness and compassion to rival Scarface's, Devin possesses a party-guy veneer that belies an insight and sensitivity to which few can lay claim. Devin's hapless narrator is, by song's end, often left broke, friendless, loveless and—worst of all—without any weed; his most hedonistic parables invariably contain precious pearls of wisdom.

Born in St. Petersburg, Florida, Devin relocated to Texas when he was in the fourth grade. Even while bouncing between Houston and the border town New Boston, Texas, Devin managed to join a b-boy crew called 3-D. Sometime in the late '80s, after settling in H-Town for good, Devin met MC/producer Rob Quest (AKA Blind Rob), who was part of a local clique known as the Coughee Brothas. ("Coughee" is a euphemism for marijuana.) Devin, alongside Quest and longtime friend Jugg Mugg, formed a new crew called the Odd Squad. The crew's original DJ, the storied DJ Screw, passed their demo to James "Prince" Smith, the CEO of the legendary Houston rap label Rap-A-Lot Records. Prince immediately snapped up the talented group, eventually releasing their Fadanuf fa Erybody LP in 1994.

While a critical success, Fadanuf failed to generate major sales. H-Town godfather Scarface, who helped build Rap-A-Lot (and gangsta rap in general) as one of the Geto Boys, handpicked Devin to be a part of his group Facemob; the lone Facemob LP, The Other Side of the Law, dropped in 1996, and was quickly followed by the squad's dissolution. With the guidance of 'Face and James Prince, Devin then began working on solo material. Taking a cue from a favorite song as a child (Quincy Jones's "The Dude"), Devin's album title—and, eventually, his moniker—was decided.

Rap-A-Lot's best in-house purveyors of Southern-fried production—Tone Capone, NO Joe, and Domo—provided a slow-rolling afterparty funk that positively dripped fish grease. Devin's genius for raunchy humor and matter-of-fact insights (inspired in part by childhood hero Blowfly) into matters mundane and meaningful made the album essential, particularly among his fellow weed smokers.

The Dude's game-dripping verse on "Fuck You," off Dr. Dre's hugely successful 2001 album sent his stock through the roof and caused speculation that Devin would sign with Aftermath. However, Devin remained loyal to the label that put him on, and dropped two more well-regarded LPs on Rap-A-Lot, Just Tryin' ta Live (2002) and To tha X-Treme (2004). Cameo spots on albums for artists ranging from Dilated Peoples and De La Soul to Twista and E-40 have kept Devin's name hot with his scene-stealing verses and hooks.

The fact that Devin translates naturally in whatever setting he finds himself in is testimony to his enduring character... It turns out that he's the man for his time and place. Like so many others, the Dude has accrued platinum respect over his career, yet he's never achieved the corresponding plaques. That's largely because he's never compromised himself for sales, as all around him, new-jacks mumble about candy paint and sippin' syrup ad nauseam. No matter, friend: The Dude abides.

The early word on Gnarls Barkley has been bubbling in the last few weeks in the UK, with the leak of the song "Crazy". Ghostface Hatrick

One could say that Ghostface has been living up to the first half of his name for the past year, but that is about to change... Ghost is reportedly planning to release three albums this year according to MTV.

"Ghostface's next album may as well be titled Ghostface Meets Metal Face, as he's teaming up with iron-mask-loving hip-hop veteran MF Doom. I'm into old hip-hop, and the music that he makes is right up my alley. His beats are real underground... Meanwhile, Ghost is digging up tracks for his next solo album, tentatively titled Rapper's Delight, and Doom may have some tracks on that project as well."

In addition, Ghost also promised the Chef would be featured on at least four or five tracks on his new joint. And the icing on the cake - "The two are also in the early stages of piecing together a second duet album, following up Only Built 4 Cuban Linx."

Here's a description fra Village Voice of the Interpol concert that I was blessed to experience, along with a visit to Dark Room with some local hipster-friends:

"We went uptown to watch INTERPOL blow the doors off Radio City Music Hall. Any illusions that I was going to have a nice adult evening at a proper venue where I could sit my old ass down were quickly destroyed. The band was so loud I could feel the drums on my face 100 rows back and everyone was standing. A frat boy type stood in front of me wearing a JOY DIVISION T-shirt. He kept pumping his fist in the air and screaming, "Fuck yeah!" I thought maybe he'd had an identity crisis and got lost on the way to a LIMP BIZKIT concert. The best part was when a giant 50-foot shadow of CARLOS D. appeared on the wall. Later that night at the Dark Room (where else?), the bass player said it was like being in a cocoon onstage, because the lights were so bright and their own monitors were so loud that they couldn't see or hear the crowd."

Dark Room—"With its sexy dark-red walls, leather banquettes, and crowd of attractive, expensively disheveled locals—bridges the gap between the dingy, PBR-serving dive bars and the swank, velvet-rope-guarded clubs that make up the neighborhood's scene.

It's All About the Music

Staying on the new albums tip, Kanye West - best known for his production work for Jay-Z - recently released his solo debut 'College Dropout'. While this album has been likened to the sounds of early A Tribe Called Quest, I will simply say that it is a breath of fresh air for those of us who depend on quality music like we do oxygen. For my part a man who cites No I.D. and Talib Kweli as his mentors certainly deserves some attention... Not to mention my favourite track off the below-mentioned Dilated Peoples album is produced by Kanye as well. Cop a legal listen to selected tracks or the whole album courtesy of the BBC's 1Xtra.

On a different note...

I must be going soft in my 'old' age, as I seem to have gotten trendy having jumped on the current '(re)mixing of color-named albums' bandwagon. I refer mainly to Danger Mouse's 'Grey Album', flipping the script on the production of The Beatles' 'White Album' while replacing John and Paul's lyrical talents with those of Jay-Z's from 'The Black Album'... But I have also taken a half-hearted liking to.. errr... Dj Mike's (?) experimental take on mixing Weezer's debut effort commonly known as 'The Blue Album' with Jay-Z's 'The Black Album', creating 'Jay-Zeezer The Black and Blue Album'. Have a listen here.

Having said that I do believe that we will be seeing more of these kind of (re)mix projects hitting the mainstream airwaves in future. I mean it makes sense in several instances: the artists being mixed together are getting further exposure - as in the cases of the two above-mentioned examples it has widened each artist's fanbase (after all it is not everyday your 50-odd year old boss comes and tells you how much he likes some of Jay-Z's lyrics after hearing them on the Grey Album - him being a Beatles fan and all); and in order for one of these mix projects to make it in the mainstream market, the right to use the intellectual property will have to be secured, and as such the record companies, labels and (hopefully) artists will benefit further from their released music. Furthermore in the short term it allows fairly unknown up-and-coming producers to make some noise for themselves.

Jay-Z Construction Set, for example, showcases a set of tools, allowing anybody to use (in this case) Jay-Z's lyrics from 'The Black Album', as well as some samples and drums, in order for you and I to use these elements to concoct a new take on an existing piece of work - DIY remixing. While I admittedly have not yet tried my hand at any producing, I must say it is tempting to see what I could accomplish fucking with some of my favourite records. After all this is what DJ Mike did with his Jay-Zeezer effort. If anyone knows of similar tools hit us up in the comments section and let me know where I can find them.

Neightborhood Watch

1976 Mgz has been fortunate to receive an advance copy of the new Dilated Peoples album "Neightborhood Watch". While we're not ready for an official rating yet, its fair to say that the threesome has delivered mature and slightly mellow third effort. We're happy to report, however, that it isn't overly commercial at all. As a matter of fact, apart from the melodic, sing-along of "This Way" (click here to check out the video) - it doesn't seem to have much mainstream appeal, but hey, taste changes all the time, right?

What started as a publicity stunt is now a catalyst for more censorship in the USA.

"Sources say Janet's been told her services are no longer needed at the Grammys. This comes just a day after Janet made an emotional videotaped apology in which she admitted she purposely planned the reveal at the Super Bowl half time show.

CBS wants to use up to a five-minute delay at the Grammys to edit out anything X-rated that might happen.

Variety says ABC also wants to start using a five-second delay to make sure nothing dirty gets out. Variety says ABC first considered the delay even before Janet Jackson bared her breast at the Super Bowl. It was Bono's use of the F-word at the Golden Globes that got them thinking about it."

The Love Below
"The Love Below is the best album I've heard in 10 years. Not since Bjork's Debut have I felt so strongly. I can't even deal with other music, not even the other disc of this 2 CD set, right now because I just keep putting Andre 3000 on repeat. As a reviewer, I hate falling back on the crutch of comparing an artist to other artists before him but there's a feeling here that is reminiscent of hearing Prince's Purple Rain for the first time or Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On or Bobby "Blue" Bland's Two Steps From The Blues or anything from James Brown."

Williams, one half of hip-hop production duo The Neptunes, has forged a long-time licensing partnership with the Massachusetts-based sportswear giant to produce a men’s and women’s footwear range called Ice Cream and a men’s apparel collection, Billionaire Boys Club.

According to Reebok, both lines will feature cool, cutting-edge looks reflective of William’s own unique style.

“Reebok’s licensing partnership with Pharrell will enable us to reach a new cross section of consumers,” Rbk division vice-president Todd Krinsky said.

“Pharrell’s collections will fuse skate, hip-hop and alternative rock global youth cultures to reach a broader audience across all musical genres.”

Product Placement in Video Games
TV-ratings in the US are down. Males from 18-34 watch less televisions and play more computer games. So advertisers are increasingly looking towards product placement in software entertainment. This is nothing new - just turn to early version of for example FIFA Soccer - however, its increasingly become a revenue channel for software developers.

"A more important question may be how far is too far? Will players who have plunked down $49.99 for a game feel cheated when they're bombarded with product logos? Brown is quick to point out that game product placement will never be as intrusive as television advertising. He said that subtlety is the key. "If we can include product placement without affecting the game experience or annoying the player, it will be a big success. If the commercial activity becomes obtrusive, players will let us know. We're not going to do anything that compromises the quality of the game or annoys the players."

In the Dumps

As the worldwide struggle against the misuse of intellectual property continues, the Danish judicial system recently set a new benchmark in the fight against copyright infringement, which can only be termed ‘rubbish’.

Last week, in an instance of 'has the world gone mad', the Danish courts issued a subpoena to a garbage collection company for copyright infringement. The case revolves around the fact that the company’s fleet of garbage trucks are equipped with radios and/or cd players. As this fleet of trucks is accessible to a vast number of the company’s staff, the prosecutor has deemed them a public space, and as such they believe that they should be liable for paying royalty fees. Needless to say, should this case be resolved in favour of the prosecutor in the Danish courts, this will pave the way for a new wave of copyright-related court cases not only in Denmark, but worldwide. Well, I hate to imitate the news of other blogs, but I thought this item was rather cool. It seems that people are starting to sneak their Skype I.D. into their e-mail signatures. I haven't done it, but now I might! For a "Managent of Technology" graduate and (a couple of others probably) this interesting because it is diffusion of technology - in progress. The interesting thing to follow with Skype is the "networking effect". The more users, the more useful it is - it was the same with the fax machine or early P2P.

Tarantino's 4th movie KILL BILL

"Kill Bill, Volume 1" is the hippest
thing I've seen on screen since "Pulp Fiction."

From the opening credits (which are in Japanese) to the big finale in a
place called "The House of Blue Leaves", "Kill Bill" is full of visual knockouts.
There are set piece homages to Tarantino's favorite Japanese films,
which are going to be parodied and copied as slavishly as "Pulp Fiction."

It's "Crouching Tiger" and "The Matrix," mixed together and served with hot
sauce. What a meal these three films will make some day at a revival house!

GAM3 Finals
Its been a few weeks now, but on Saturday 9th this month the second annual GAM3 Finals streetbasketball tournament was held in Copenhagen, Denmark. Located in the very center of the city - the City Hall Square ("Rådhuspladsen") - the 3 on 3 competition attracted more than 50 teams. Throughout the day, plenty of hiphop djs and artists were on stage - and the tournament even had an unannounced visit by Tash and J-Ro from Tha Liks!

The Polyphonic Spree
This "ambitious pop project that remain hard to pin down" was first brought to my attention when beatmaker Rjd2 remixed one of their songs. Then - right now - I just noticed that they're one of the opening bands at the Roskilde Festival where I'm going to for the 10th year in a row next week. Anyways, the off-beat photo below is apperantly from a recent Polyphonic Spree photo shoot.

Sutrapumo: Winners!
What a succes story. You probably read about Sutrapumo here before anywhere else, and yes, the band just won the Danish edition of the international Emergenza music contest. They'll be playing The European Finals in Hamburg on August 9th, 2003 in the next round. What's next for these guys?Congratulations!!

The Alis Project
Just checkin' out the ALIS news section for some street vibes, and it turns out there's some info on APX: The Alis Project Xhibit, which could become the biggest Danish export success since Lego.

"In 2002 ALIS assembled a creative team in conjunction with the design group UNIT-. The team consists of 4 designers: Satoru Inoue, Jacob Wildschioedtz, Troels Faber and Jonas Hz and the project, collectively known as "APX" was launched. APX is a shortening of ALIS PROJECT XHIBIT and is pronounced [apex]. This is an important art project for ALIS. The word apex means a spiritual summit or peak. With this in mind, the goal is to create a forum where the highest ideals of ALIS can be expressed freely without boundaries or constraints such as commercial value, current trends etc. This spirit will be captured visually through various exhibitions, events and related medias.

In spring 2003 the first APX session was presented to the public in the form of an exclusive and limited collection of experimental design and clothing. This was the beginning of the APX clothing-line.

Every single product is unique and made by hand. All elements in the APX clothing-line have a creative function through integrated and various tools. It is an unfinished canvas that invites for interaction and further creative development. According to the way of life in Christiania, this gives the perfect opportunity to customize and differentiate every product.
Style can't be mass-produced!"

I'm Not A Player
The market online computer games a.k.a. Massive Multiplayer Games, such as Everquest and Sims Online, is massive (doh!). Analyst and marketing company The Themis Group predicts that revenues will exceed $635 million in 2003. As the number of broadband connections increases, MMGs will be even more popular. In Korea alone there are 100 MMGs and Korea has the world highest penetration of broadband connections. Interestingly, there is no retail market since everything gets copied anyway. Instead developers base their income on partnerships with portals and ISPs. Read more.

The White Stipes
Well, tonight, southwest Detroit minimalist rock duo The White Stipes are playing Vega, Copenhagen, and naturally I'm looking forward to a riveting performance.

A concert - with a ticket price and a band like that - ought to be researched a bit, so let me present some lesser-known findings about the style-obsessed duo:

De Stijl means "The Style" in Dutch, and it's the title of The White Stripes second LP from 2000. De Stijl (Dutch, "The Style"), was a periodical founded by the painters Theo van Doesburg and Piet Mondrian in 1917. Today, you can check out the matching De Stijl font sent.

Park Walk
This "Lizard" was drawn by comic book artist Vaughn Bodé, who passed away in 1975 at age 33. Bodé is an icon among graffiti artists. The Lizard now appears on t-shirts from Park Walk, a Mo'Wax affiliated clothing company. Spine Magazine has recently brought a Park Walk feature. It's all 'bout the connections... I just made some for you!
